PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT: Get Ready for Medicare Open Enrollment with Free, Unbiased Help from SHIP

By

Healthcare decisions can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate them alone. As October approaches, now is the time to start preparing for Medicare Open Enrollment, which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.

Whether you have a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) or a standalone Prescription Drug Plan (Part D), insurance providers update their costs, covered medications, copays, and provider networks every single year. Staying on “autopilot” with your current plan might seem easiest, but it could lead to unexpected out-of-pocket expenses or losing access to your trusted doctors on Jan. 1.

Through the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP), administered locally by the Lincoln Trail Area Development District’s Community Aging & Social Engagement (CASE) Team, we offer free, friendly, and completely objective guidance to help you find the right fit for 2027.

Our open enrollment team is focused entirely on your health, peace of mind, and financial well-being:

  • 100% Unbiased Guidance: SHIP counselors are state-certified advisors. They do not sell insurance or earn commissions, meaning their only goal is helping you find the coverage that best fits your needs and budget.
  • Extra Savings Screening: Counselors automatically screen every senior for income-based financial assistance programs, such as Extra Help or Medicare Savings Programs, which can dramatically lower your prescription drug costs and monthly premiums.
  • Convenient Appointments: We offer free consultations over the phone, virtually, or in-person at accessible community venues across Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, and Washington counties.

To ensure a smooth and accurate review of your 2027 options, gather these essential items when scheduling or attending your appointment:

  • Cards: Your red, white, and blue Medicare card along with your current health or drug plan ID card.
  • Medication List: A complete, up-to-date list of all your prescription medications, including exact dosages and how often you take them.
  • Provider List: The full names of your preferred doctors, specialists, hospitals, and pharmacies.
  • Notice of Change Letter: Your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) packet, which arrives in your mailbox each September from your current provider.

Navigating plan rules, drug formularies, and strict federal deadlines doesn’t have to be stressful. By letting LTADD handle the administrative details, you can make informed, confident choices about your health coverage for the coming year.
