History: Although Clarkson was incorporated on April 23, 1908, the community started nearly fifty years earlier under the name Bray’s Station. A stop along the railroad, the station’s name was changed to Grayson Springs Station because of the nearby Grayson Springs Summer Resort. The town was renamed Clarkson in the early 1930’s honoring M.P. Clarkson; owner of a hotel at Grayson Springs. By the end of that decade, the station’s name was changed to Clarkson to correspond with the official post office established in 1870. The depot closed in 1942. At the turn of the century, Clarkson was a farming center and a significant trading center. About that time, the area also underwent a growth in industry. The population in 2020 was 933.
