How Local Collaboration Restored Safety to the Liletown Road Bridge in Green County

When critical infrastructure fails, community safety and daily routines are directly impacted. For residents in Green County, the bridge on Liletown Road had long been a source of concern. 

Rated as “Poor” by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) with a strict 9-ton load restriction, the aging structure was unusable for heavy emergency vehicles and school buses, forcing lengthy detours and posing safety risks for local families.

Today, thanks to a strong partnership between LTADD, Green County, and regional engineering partner, CivilCon, a brand-new bridge is under construction, fully meeting all KYTC safety standards and restoring essential access to the community.

Replacing critical infrastructure requires a seamless blend of grant administration, technical field work, and expert engineering design.

To bring the Liletown Road Bridge project to life, LTADD worked hand-in-hand with Charlie Allen, PE, of CivilCon to move the project from an initial concept into the construction phase. While LTADD helped secure $876,790 through the County-City Bridge Improvement Program (CCBIP) and provided technical support, such as drafting, drone aerial surveys, and project development, CivilCon delivered the structural engineering analysis, agency coordination, final plan reviews, bid document preparation, and construction inspection services.

This collaborative approach ensured the project met every state requirement while making local taxpayers’ dollars stretch as far as possible.

The new structure is a modern 20-foot-wide by 84-foot-long box beam bridge designed to handle full traffic loads, including school buses, agricultural equipment, and emergency response vehicles.

By securing competitive bids, the final construction contract came in well under the initial grant award, delivering an exceptional return on investment for Green County while solving a major safety hazard.

The completion of the Liletown Road Bridge demonstrates how effective regional collaboration turns local infrastructure challenges into success stories. By leveraging technical resources such as drone aerial imagery alongside professional engineering expertise, LTADD continues to support member counties in securing grant funding and delivering vital public works projects efficiently.
