Empowering Independence, Taking Action During Falls Prevention Awareness Month
At LTADD, our mission centers on enhancing the quality of life, independence, and overall well-being of residents across our eight-county region. Through our Community Aging & Social Engagement (CASE) Team, we work every day to ensure our community’s older adults can age safely, comfortably, and actively in the places they call home.
September marks Falls Prevention Awareness Month, a timely reminder that remaining independent as we age often begins with a single, proactive step.
Falls are not an inevitable part of aging. In fact, many falls are preventable. Small, intentional changes to your daily routine, health management, and living spaces can make a transformative difference in preserving your mobility, safety, and piece of mind.
Taking charge of your health doesn’t require drastic changes. Focus on these core practical strategies to protect yourself or your loved ones:
- Stay Physically Active: Engage in routine exercises that build strength, balance, flexibility, and mobility. Activities tailored for older adults help maintain steady movement and confidence.
- Consult Your Healthcare Provider: Talk openly with your doctor about your fall risk. Request a review of your current prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, as certain side effects or interactions can cause dizziness or loss of balance.
- Schedule Regular Vision Checks: Clear vision is vital for navigating obstacles. Ensure your eye prescription is up to date annually.
- Assess Your Living Environment: Make your home safer by clearing away floor clutter and loose throw rugs, improving hallway and stairwell lighting, and adding secure grab bars in bathrooms.
- Participate in Local Prevention Programs: Join community evidence-based falls prevention classes, like our Tai Chi classes, designed to help you gain practical movement skills, boost physical confidence, and manage daily risks effectively.
Building stronger, healthier communities means providing direct access to the tools our residents need to thrive. LTADD’s CASE Team acts as your direct gateway to evidence-based programs, caregiver support, and community-based aging services tailored specifically for adults in Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, and Washington counties.
Evidence-based falls prevention courses give participants the opportunity to strengthen their physical mobility while learning side-by-side with peers in a supportive environment.
Independence is built on confidence, community care, and staying informed. Whether you are an older adult looking to maintain your active lifestyle, or a family caregiver seeking support for a loved one, LTADD is here to guide you every step of the way.
